Plan your drinking pace to stay under a target BAC level. This free interactive drink pacing calculator uses the Widmark formula to show how many drinks you can have over a given time period while keeping your BAC below your chosen limit. Set your target BAC (e.g., 0.5‰ to stay under the legal driving limit in most European countries), enter your body weight and gender, choose your drink type (beer, wine, or spirits with custom ABV and size), and specify your session duration. The calculator then tells you the maximum number of drinks and the recommended gap between each drink. Why pacing matters: drinking pace is one of the biggest factors in peak BAC. Four drinks consumed in one hour can produce a BAC nearly three times higher than the same four drinks spread over four hours. This is because your liver eliminates alcohol at a fixed rate of approximately 0.15‰ per hour — when you drink faster than your liver can process, BAC rises rapidly. Research shows that most alcohol-related incidents occur not because people drink too much in total, but because they drink too fast. Pre-planning your pace — deciding before you start how you'll space your drinks — is a proven harm-reduction strategy recommended by the WHO. Most health guidelines suggest no more than one standard drink per hour, but individual variation in metabolism, body composition, and tolerance means your optimal pace may differ. This calculator gives you a personalized pacing plan. Sources: NIAAA, WHO alcohol harm reduction guidelines, Widmark (1932).
